For Models Made in 1962 and newer:

The Serial number Identification plate may be found on the upper left corner of the firewall inside the engine compartment or on the drivers side of the instrument panel.

Decoding the serial number:

First and Second Digit 81 means universal CJ3B

Third and Fourth Digit 05 Open Body, 10 - Diesel engine, 18 - Stripped Chassis, 23 - Fire engine

Fifth Digit A - V6-225 engine, C - Canadian Built, O - Disregard, S - Smog

Sixth Digit 1 - Left Hand Drive, 2 - Right Hand Drive, 2 - LHD California, fuel evap, control

Seventh Digit 4 - F4-134 engine w/o emission, 5 - F4-134 w/emission, 6 - V6-225 w/o emission, 7 - V6-225 w/ emission.

Eigth thru thriteenth digit is the sequential serial number

 

Engine Build Code

The F4-134 engine code may be located on the water pump boss at the front of the cylinder head block. The code consists of 3 groups of digits with either alphabetic or numeric characters.

Decoding the engine serial number:

First digit M - Military, E - Export, D - Domestic

Second Digit R - 1969 F4-134, S - 1970 F4-134, T - 1971 F4-134

**Prior to 1967 all F4-134 engine codes were marked 4J plus serial number**

Third Digit F - F4-134

Fourth thru sixth digit Day of year built, plus change if any

Seventh digit A - undersize crank and rod bearings .010 oversize, B - Oversize bores .010 undersize, M - Main bearings .010 undersize (F4-134 only) , P - Connecting rod bearings .010 undersize

Seventh and eigth digit AB - .010 undersize crankshaft main and connecting rod bearings with .010 oversize bores in cylinder block

Note: seventh and eigth digits were only shown on engines that had other than standard characteristics

Ninth Digit S - Service engine, R - Short block

Tenth and eleventh digit 60 - 6.0 to 1 compression ratio, 63 - 6.3 to 1, 67 - 6.7 to 1, 71 - 7.1 to 1

 

Paint and Trim Codes

Paint and trim option plate is usually affixed to the engine side of the dash panel on the right hand side of the vehicle. The number 999 on the plate designates a special paint or trim. L or E on the tag refer to either Lacquer or Enamel paint.
